The nose is a rye with some sweetness to it; some fruity & light floral notes The palate has a distinctive “rye” vibe, and these other notes, coupled with rye grasses, gives it a variable “funkiness” as the taste lingers on. The finish gives me a somewhat delayed aftertaste that, once again to me & my palate, resurrected this hard yo describe “funkiness”, and left me with an aftertaste I did NOT like or ebjoy…I felt compelled to eviscerate it with a much better rye whiskey or a quality bourbon to re-calibrate my tastebuds and mouthfeel to “normality! Definitely NOT on my “Good List” ; I won’t buy it again!
About this bottle
Uncle Nearest Straight Rye begins with rye whiskey sourced from Canada. Then it's aged further in New York (four years minimum) before a final trip to Tennessee where it rests in used Uncle Nearest whiskey barrels for further maturation. The barrels are then tasted and blended by Master Blender Victoria Eady Butler. Uncle Nearest Straight Rye is the brand's first nationally released whiskey since 1884 Small Batch Whiskey which launched in 2019. Bottled at 100 proof, it's available to purchase as of November 10, 2022 at the Nearest Green Distillery in Shelbyville, Tennessee with a further national roll out throughout the month of November. Quite light in color. Looks like a mason jar of yellow popcorn seeds. Has a wonderful sweet nose of creamed corn and cooked apples with cinnamon and a bit of barn must. For a ride, this is extremely pronounced with corn all over. It's soft and sweet up front, and the creamed corn noted on the nose definitely comes through on the front, stays in the mid palate and leans into the finish. Trails off with vanilla and heath bars accented by cinnamon, clove and baking cacao. A bit of tartness like a granny smith apple pie drizzled with caramel shows up on the finish, reminding that it actually is a rye.
Part of our Tennessee whiskey tour was the amazing Uncle Nearest Distillery. There, the guided tasting had this Rye expression that really called my attention. On the nose, i get lemongrass, fresh gooseberies, brown sugar, grapefruit. Mostly fruity. The palate is all about red fruits, cherries, a bit grainy though. Aftertaste had a chocolate profile, with cherries, ginger, and dry grain. Overall this one was very flavorful and interesting. I get some complexity out of it that is not usual in most Tennessee whiskies. My score for it is 89 over 100.
A terrific rye that hits all the marks. Slightly sweet entry with a bushel of rye heat immediately following. A lot of body here with a medium-heavy mouthfeel. Loads of baking spice, and holiday nut roll are apparent, with the oak cask keeping everything from going off the rails. The finish is exceptionally long, with a hint of cinnamon, allspice and black walnut. This is so good you’ll want a few bottles!
Nose is full of cherry, and cinnamon oatmeal raisin cookie... and a hint of citrus(?). Palate is a full-on spice bomb with the oatmeal raisin cookie sweetness carrying over. Slightly warm hug in the chest, but very little burn. Short spicy finish. I have been mostly a Bourbon drinker, but have recently been exploring the world of Rye. This is a winner.
On the nose there is a strong presence of vanilla with subtle undertones of fruit. On the palate, there is also vanilla and apple as the predominant flavors. When adding a drop of water, the flavors shift and push carmel to the forefront with a long finish.
