Reminds me more of a white wine. Missing the dark fruit notes of sherry finish. More like cooking sherry. Oak spice is there, some vanilla and honey. But lacking depth for me. After some time in the glass. The depth starts to come through. Initial alcohol dissipates and the sherry starts to show itself
About this bottle
The second in Virginia Distillery's Courage & Conviction series, released in August 2020, is an homage to the late Dr. Jim Swan, a Scotch whisky distiller, scientist and educator who was one of the distillery's original consultants and had worked on this release. 100% malted barley distilled on site was matured in a combination of ex-bourbon, ex-European wine ("cuvée") and sherry (fino, oloroso and PX) casks, which were subject to very warm summers and cool winters between 2016 and 2020. The final ratio of cask selection was 50% bourbon casks with 25% each of the cuvée and sherry casks, with a portion of this batch held for the next one. The Dr. Jim Swan Batch of Courage & Conviction produced 1,650 cases of 750mL bottles, or 9,900 bottles, according to the distillery.

It smells like oak and red table wine. There is an initial cloying wine-like sweetness that leads into a harsh oaky finish.
Very enjoyable ASM.
