About this bottle

Westland American Oak American Single Malt is distilled in Seattle using 100% malted barley. The malted barley, 90% sourced from Washington State, is comprised of 5 different types: Munich malt, extra special malt, brown malt, pale chocolate malt, and Washington Select pale malt. Additionally, a strain of Belgian brewer's yeast is used. This matured a minimum of 36 months in Cooper's Select new American oak, Cooper's Reserve new American oak, and first-fill ex-bourbon barrels. Note: As of spring 2021, this along with the Sherry Oak and Peated Oak expressions are discontinued.

Color: mine came in a nice box and it’s a nice lighter color similar to corn or like a cream color. Nose: get a leafy, dry tobacco cent to Thai one. Similar to like an herbal tea. It’s pleasant and zero burn/ ethanol notes. Reminds me of a herbal leaf tea Palate: dark leafy brown tobacco like leaves. Really kind of one dimensional with the dark, leafy, herbal notes. Finish: finish shirt with like the same herbal leafy, tea like flavors. Not too long but it’s so smooth and calm. Lingering herbal/ vegetal flavor. Experience and info: so I decided I wanted to try American single malts. I saw through my state control that this product was being discontinued and was only available at one location within an hour of my place. I decided to grab one and give it a try. At an msrp of 70 usd or so it’s an interesting option. I understand that the pricing of malted barley and barley is high. The intriguing part of this is the 5 malt usage and the idea of specific grains. I had to snag one to try at 44 usd after taxes and the such. This makes it more reasonable to try for me. Would I buy this again? No, but I would try other varieties from this company. They make a fine single malt for sure but, with it being just American oak casks I don’t think there’s much influence from the casks so it’s not a perfect bottle. I like it but I don’t love it. I look forward to seeing more from Westland in the future and will follow their company. This was a great intro into American single malt. For $70 I expected much more diversity and things similar to other reviews and notes. My palate is fresh and I don’t have the same identification as others but, it was a good easy sipping pour. I am a proof hound, cask strength lover so maybe it’s just not “in my face” and that’s why I don’t love this to pieces. As a fresh crack and first pour I will be returning to it and enjoying it.

I get grapes and wood on the nose along with some slight leather and clean eucalyptus notes. It's very sweet and light. The palate is really good and complex, deeper than the nose would lead you to believe. Wood and leather of a study, lots of dark earthy tones that are complimented by a light sweetness. Finish is moderate but good with more earthy notes being joined by some medicinal bitter sweet ones. I really enjoyed this and definitely look forward to more from this distillery. Later visits brought some dark chocolate or coffee out on the back end of the taste and into the finish, it's a good one!

It smells like dirty socks, but the flavor is not bad. Wood and a bit of citrus come through after a sharp beginning. The taste is predominantly sweet and tart, making it a bit reminiscent of a rye, but with more sweet richness and fewer floral notes. So, a rye mixed with an ale, perhaps. This is a refreshing flavor with some baking spices jumping in to add to the interest. I wouldn't call it exceptionally deep but it is interesting and lively. Perhaps it is not the greatest single malt whiskey out there, but it is a nice change of pace with a rich backing and a fair amount of depth.

No batch/bottling date on bottle. Pours a deep gold/light copper. Oaky baking spice and ethanol are first aromas, followed by youthful doughy malt, honey, grassy/floral notes, green apple. Drying oak spice on first sip followed by vanilla, grassy/doughy malt, flash of that green apple, then tootsie roll choc finish lingers pleasantly (likely from choc malt in the grist bill). Overall noticeably young but solid and keeps interest, might like to see some more age to get it past that immaturity though.

Nose is very strong and pleasant, it has a bit of coffee and vanilla. Palette is smooth with a hint of coffee that turns into an oakiness and the finish has a bit of smokiness/spiciness that becomes a quick warm burn, which dissipates and leaves a taste of coffee in your mouth. Overall this is pretty good, I love the smell and the initial palette, but I feel that the lingering of the coffee bat the end will weigh on me over the course of this tasting.

nose - the barley comes through immediately, a nice cinnamon, buttery, and a sugar-cookie ending palette - big, smooth barley on the front, that slight sweet sugar-cookie follows mid-taste, a little cinnamon and hints of stone fruit and even strawberry surprised by how much im enjoying this one, as american single malta are gaining ground in the whiskey scene ever so slightly. this is easily a daily-sipper with its approachable taste
