About this bottle

The base of this whiskey is Widow Jane's Oak Rye, aged in a once-used 10 year bourbon barrel, but with fresh cut applewood staves in the mix. Though it made from rye mash, because it is matured in used oak, it is not technically a rye whiskey, hence the name. It is bottled at 45.5% ABV.

Color: Cloudy orangeade. Nose: Fruit basket burst, powered by blossoms and sweet citrus. Soft spices lurk in the background. Palate: Tart pink apple up front with fennel and grassy, floral notes. Baking spice and rich vanilla accent the fruit, like a cobbler or apple pie. Finish: Creamy, and more sweet than spicy. Diluted: Tart green apple skins jump out on the nose. A few more barrel notes on the palate, with some light sweet caramel and a little cinnamon. Finish shortens and thins a bit, but pops with more fruit.

The nose is not full of surprises, with apple, cinnamon and light oak. Use of applewood in the aging shows throughout with tart apple on the front of the pallet and warmer, baked apple on the middle and back of the pallet. A few sips brings out a touch of orange and more cinnamon. Noticeably younger with a softer finish than you might expect from a rye. Regardless of these late notes it remains heavily apple-forward throughout, limiting its complexity.

Brassy Color, pretty sticky. Nose shows tons of Rye spice and fruity notes. Some Barn must and plenty of wood. Reminds me of a spiced German apple cake... Caramel covered Granny Smith apples with grains to boot. Soft mouth feel that warms gently all the way down. Sticky at the back, leaving a great finish. This can pretty near hang with the rum aged rye from angels envy.

This whiskey has a clover honey color, and thick watery legs dribble down the glass. The nose is green and fruity starting out with light nail polish, green pine, green apple, dill, and sawdust. The palate is thin, dry, and fruity namely with apple and pear, fruit gushers, and strawberry. The finish is short, hot, and tangy with a taste of mango.

I hate to say it but this tastes like pure pine resins! Love all the other products that widow jane makes, but this is a horrible product. Maybe it's just me but myself and others think this Rye is a waste of a good brand.

Literally a perfect balance of spice and sweet apple. Get a nice brown sugery taste, but it isn't sickly. Really easy to drink. If you offered it to someone, I think they'd comment on it positively, saying it's unique!
