Nose- Vanilla, caramel, oak with a hit of menthol. A bit muted,but the bourbon aging really comes through! Palate- creme brulee, cherry cough drop, a bit of agave nectar followed by a wave of spice. You can taste the oak in every sip. Mouthfeel is rich and bourbony. Finish- nice long, spicy finish. Cinnamon red hot candies and some all spice are the prevalent notes it goes out on Overall- this is a bourbon lovers tequila! It has all the notes of bourbon with the rich, buttery mouthfeel of tequila. There is just enough vegetal agave to make you understand that this is aged tequila and not light bourbon. It is a really fun and perhaps dangerously good sip. If you are a bourbon lover looking to get into the art of tequila, let me recommend this to ease your way.

Expresiones del Corazón is an annual series of tequila produced at Casa San Matias Distillery in Los Altos de Jalisco, Mexico with reposados and añejos matured in barrels from Buffalo Trace. This tequila was aged 26 months in casks that once held William Larue Weller bourbon. It is bottled at 40% ABV and available in limited quantities as of December, 2021.

What a truly lovely tequila. We were expecting a great spirit, but this one is more than simply great. It is remarkable. The nose is delicate, with notes of vegetal agave intertwined with the sweet corn of a bourbon. Light spiciness and oak add a patina of warmth. The flavor is masterful, yet with a similar delicateness. Notes of mild agave, vanilla, caramel, wood, toast and praline bring a self-assured and friendly welcome to the palate. The finish is medium-long with a nutty sensation that lingers for a few minutes after the fadeout. We would love to try the others in this series, but as for the Weller expression, it has won our hearts.
