About this bottle

Don Julio 70 is an añejo tequila that is filtered to remove the color imparted in the aging process. It is aged for 18 months in used American white oak barrels. 70 does not refer to the proof (which is 80 proof), but to the 70th anniversary of the distillery Don Julio started in 1942. This bottling was released in 2012 to commemorate that occasion.

When it comes to tequila I generally only prefer the extra anejo. This one is crystal clear which worries me from the start, but it was a free pour at a family gathering so let's give it a go. Nose is typical smooth sweetness of premium tequilas. Nothing off putting here so that is a good start. First sip is a bit of citrus that mellows the traditional tequila. This almost comes across as a gin inspired tequila. There is a bit of alcohol heat in the middle here, but overall it is relatively smooth. Overall this isn't bad for a clear tequila. I wouldn't trade it in for the extra anejos, but it was better than I expected. If you are a tequila fan this is probably a nice variant to try.

Neat. Nose is sweet and vanilla with some slight floral, green herbs, minerals, ash/char. Taste is agave sweet with some caramel, blossom honey, vanilla, cardamom, cake batter/cream soda, and green herbs. Any oak is minimal Finish is sweet, vanilla, and grassy/herbal and a touch of barrel spice. Overall, it tastes good, but doesn't taste like real tequila. There does seem to be a fair dose of additives. I prefer this to some $$$ pours such as Clase Azul and even the Don Julio 1942..but there are better pours of more authentic tequila for a little less

I don’t give out 5 stars easily but as far as tequila goes I love this. I’m not big into tequila. Any tequila I’ve usually had was a younger me with a shot in my hand that was hard to put down or a margarita. But this stuff I DRINK ON THE ROCKS. In fact, if your doing anything besides drinking it on the rocks your wasting a great tequila. I have 2 bottles of this and will only drink it occasionally. Two thumbs up!

Very smooth with subdued caramelized agave/vanilla sweetness and a suggestion of pepper. Very easy drinking. I guess I was hoping for more. It’s got a good taste but it feels like some of the richness has been filtered away with the colour. I agree with ScotchingHard. It comes across as a gimmick, best suited for the high end club scene. 1942 is better. Not currently available in Ontario.

"To my surprise this is my favorite Don Julio expression so far. The nose is indistinguishable from the anejo, no surprise there, but after filtration, along with the color it took the bitterness with it, making this a smoooth elegant supper. Love. Much love. Much much love.
