A college thing, 40 years ago, so I can't honestly give you a full tasting breakdown. But I do remember that it had that smokey charred earth flavor that separated it from tequilas of the era. And the worm, of course, that imparted a sense of exotic authenticity. But I was not a fan back then--either because of my age and inexperience or because of the liquor itself. Today I am a fan of modern mezcals, sipped and mixed, and think there are enough quality versions (in the Del Maguey portfolio alone!) to offer you better options. But, by all means, try it yourself. Don't feel you need to eat the worm.

Monte Alban has a distinct flavor, quite different from other mezcals and, unfortunately, more along the lines of cheap tequila. I have tasted a lot of mezcals and this one missed the mark. It lacked the smokey essence that makes mezcal preferable to tequila for me. I tasted it alongside El Silencio, an equally cheap mezcal, and the Monte Alban was nowhere near as good. I guess when life gives you a bottle Monte Alban, make margaritas! I'm wondering if I got a bottle from a bad batch, because other reviews seem to think more highly of it.
Clear, light gold, with uniform alcohol legs. Nose- faint agave tanginess and generalized 80 proof alcohol. Taste- also faint agave, with a of hint of polypropylene plastic. Medium body. Moderate-long finish. RJT
the mezcal that made me love mezcals. I love the spice packet that comes with it because it brings out more of the fantastic flavor. I can enjoy a hearty amount of it and treats me well. highly recommended!
I'm far from being a mezcal expert, but I do enjoy this one... especially for the price. I get spicy (habanero?) limes with some sugar on top. Not very challenging, but certainly very drinkable.
Caught up in the Urban Cowboy craze, I tried this, and even ate the worm. It is, truly, a “been there, done that” moment.
