I’ve had it on my wishlist for a while and the movement I tried it, I felt underwhelmed. It is quite sweet although the extra char balances the flavors. It’s smooth enough to be drank on ice but, I wouldn’t say it’s complex enough for a sipper. Perhaps, it was made to compete with Brugal’s Leyenda which is also on the sweeter end of the market.
About this bottle
Like the other rums in its portfolio, Ron Barceló Imperial Onyx begins by using fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses in its production. For this brand, the rum has been aged for 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels with a heavy char. Additionally, the rum is filtered through onyx stones before its bottled at 40% ABV, hence its name. Released in February 2018.

For those of you that like Diplomatico, this is a great alternative. The flavor profile is similar, but there’s a little more tobacco and leather. The finish is a little dry, but now as sweet as Diplomatico. The price makes this a great value.
A great rum from whisky drinkers. Not just the typical caramel/vanilla flavors, but also spices, Wood, tobacco, vegetal flavors from pure sugarcane juice, and smokiness from high charred barrels. Better than regular Imperial
Great rum. A soft, non-alcoholic nose, a dense body with hints of smoke and unobtrusive spices. Not a long, but pleasant aftertaste.
This is a great product and one of my favorite sippers. Perfect balance of sweet and spice with A bit of wood on it.
